NYACH has released the first in a series of Occupational Profiles on Medical Assistants. Medical assistants are increasingly important members of care teams, and their roles have grown to include—in addition to clinical tasks—medical office activities, patient education, and documentation. Consequently, healthcare employers are looking for medical assistants who have the innate characteristics for productive and empathetic patient engagement and work on interdisciplinary teams. NYACH convened a sector-based workgroup of health care employers to identify desired characteristics and education for medical assistants. This profile synthesizes those findings and outlines the key components of a medical assistant training program to prepare students for employment in today’s healthcare system. The occupational profile is intended to help guide workforce development and education providers interested in the most up-to-date industry intelligence, in order redesign or align their programs.
